How To Screenshot On Windows ?

Capturing a screenshot on a Windows PC is a useful skill for documenting what’s on your screen. Whether you need to save a picture, share an error message, or create a guide, Windows offers several ways to do this.

Step 1: Capture the Entire Screen

  • PrtScn (Print Screen) Method: Press the PrtScn key. This copies the entire screen to the clipboard. You can paste (Ctrl+V) this into any image editor, document, or email.
  • Windows+PrtScn: Pressing Windows + PrtScn will save the screenshot as a file. Your screen will briefly go dim to indicate a successful capture. Screenshots are saved in the Pictures library, in the Screenshots folder.

Step 2: Capture a Single Window

  • Click on the window you want to capture to make it active.
  • Press Alt + PrtScn. This captures only the active window and copies it to your clipboard. Paste it into an image editor or document.

Step 3: Capture a Specific Area (Windows 10 and Later)

  • Use Windows + Shift + S. This opens the Snip & Sketch tool.
  • Drag to select the area of the screen you want to capture.
  • The selected area is copied to your clipboard and can be pasted directly into a document or image editor.

Step 4: Use the Snipping Tool (Windows 10 and Earlier)

  • Search for the ‘Snipping Tool’ in the Start menu.
  • Open the tool and click ‘New’.
  • Select the type of snip you want (full screen, rectangular, window, or free-form).
  • Capture the screenshot and save it using the tool.

Step 5: Use the Game Bar (For Gaming Screenshots)

  • Press Windows + G to open the Game Bar.
  • Click on the ‘Camera’ icon to take a screenshot of your game.
  • Screenshots are saved in the ‘Videos’ folder, under ‘Captures’.

Additional Tips:

  • Editing Screenshots: After capturing a screenshot, you can use tools like Paint, Paint 3D, or any image editor to modify the screenshot.
  • Clipboard History: Windows 10 allows you to access a history of items copied to the clipboard, including screenshots, by pressing Windows + V.
